What is a Limiting Belief?

A limiting belief is a series of repetitive thoughts that you've had over some time, to the point where it becomes a limiting belief. The “limiting” part simply means it doesn’t serve you. However, at some point in your life, those limiting beliefs served you, but maybe right now in your life, they don't serve you anymore.

An example of this is - As children, it was important to exercise caution around strangers as a safety measure. Nevertheless, we now live in an interconnected and globalized world where developing new relationships and building trust with strangers can be critical.

It's important to recognize and let go of what no longer serves you so that you can finally achieve the goals you're looking to achieve.

How to change your beliefs fast

To change your beliefs fast, you must strip away the garbage. In other words, jump straight into them and investigate whether or not they are true.

Your beliefs aren’t always true. Ask yourself, “is this belief true?” You need to know with absolute certainty that this belief is 100% true before you move on to the next part.

(We’ll cover what to do if you have 100% certainty of the belief in a moment.)

If you're not quite sure, this is a good thing because you don't have certainty that this belief is true. And more often than not, this limited belief can be changed.

Look for Evidence

If you are not sure whether a belief is true, you can look for evidence to disprove it. Look for as much proof as you can to show yourself that the belief is not true. For example, if you have a limiting belief related to a specific skill, you can look for evidence of people who have a similar background to you who have learned that skill.

For instance, you may have a belief that you aren’t a confident person. But looking more closely, you realize that you are confident in some areas of life. Maybe you have just adopted some habits that destroy your confidence.

Reprogramming your subconscious mind

To change limiting beliefs, you need to reprogram your subconscious mind. One way to do this is to create new empowering beliefs by writing the polar opposite and affirming it with affirmations and repetition. However, this only works if you have uncertainty around the belief.

Sometimes, limiting beliefs are genuinely true, such as when you lack a specific skill. In this case, the easiest thing to do is to seek new knowledge or work with a coach to develop the skill. Over time, as you develop the skill, your belief should change.

For example, if you have a limiting belief about being a professional golf player but you’ve never played golf before, then your belief is quite valid. And it’s unlikely that speaking some affirmations about being a golf pro is going to happen. Unless, of course, you put in the work to master the skill.

Overcoming limiting beliefs related to environment

Limiting beliefs related to your environment, such as your age or where you come from, can be especially challenging. It is essential to look for evidence to disprove these beliefs. Look for stories of people who have had similar backgrounds to you and who have achieved what you want to achieve. For example, if you come from a small town and want to make more money, look for evidence of people from similar backgrounds who have made it.

Seeking help and support

If you are struggling to overcome your limiting beliefs, seek help and support. You can work with a mindset coach, seek counselling, or find a mentor. The most important thing is to take action and seek help.

Sometimes, we get caught up in our world and see things a certain way. One of the benefits of working with a coach is that the process can reveal your blind spots, ask powerful questions, and act as a mirror for you. This creates incredible transformation because you experience the breakthroughs yourself, not from being told to do X, Y, or Z.

The fastest way to get rid of limiting beliefs

Limiting beliefs can hold you back from achieving your goals and living a fulfilling life. To overcome your limiting beliefs, question them, find evidence to disprove them, reprogram your subconscious mind, seek new knowledge, and seek help and support. Remember that limiting beliefs can be challenging to overcome, but with persistence and effort, you can break through those patterns and move forward in your life.
